PRINCE2® is one of the best-known project management methodologies. Its strength for many years has been structured management processes and clearly, precisely defined roles and responsibilities. PRINCE2® uses numerous project documents, so the methodology can be considered to be suitable for larger, multi-phase projects. However, in reality, it can be adapted to almost any type of project.
The update released in 2023 is different from previous editions. The changes in PRINCE2® 7th edition primarily include the human element in project execution. This certainly adds to its value and provides a more comprehensive understanding of key aspects of project management.
History and evolution of the PRINCE2® methodology
The PRINCE2® methodology took its origin from the project approach of Simpact Systems Limited under the name PROMPT (Project Resource Organization Management Planning Technique). In 1983, it was enriched with a section on quality management and adjusted to requirements. In this form, it began to be used in UK government entities as PROMPT II. Based on it, in 1989 Her Majesty's Government agency CCTA (Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency) published the PRINCE (Projects in Controlled Environments) standard, dedicated to IT projects.
PRINCE2® as a methodology that can be applied to any project and in any environment, was published in 1996. Remaining the property of the British Crown, it has changed every few years. The changes made were intended to better align it with the practice of running projects and current trends in this area of management.
Main changes in PRINCE2® 7th edition
In the latest edition of PRINCE2® 7th edition, “people” have joined the set of integrated elements of the methodology and are at its center. Looking from the perspective of those working for and influenced by the project permeates the four other elements that were already part of the PRINCE2® methodology. In doing so, the names of two of them have changed. Consequently, instead of topics and project environment, we now talk about practices and project context.
Despite the changes, in PRINCE2® 7th edition, we still have processes and principals included in the methodology. It is worth noting that practices, processes and ways of working with people should be adjusted to the project context, but the principals must always remain the same.
What do the changes to PRINCE2® 7th edition mean for trainees?
Those already certified in PRINCE2® will need to spend time reviewing the “people” component when planning their renewal. Some of the questions on the exam will address this. However, existing knowledge of principals, processes and practices will require only a few minor adjustments
PRINCE2® Foundation and PRINCE2® Practitioner certification
The current owner of the methodology is People Cert International, which is involved in its development and organization of the certification system. Our company pmexperts, as a partner, operates within the guidelines set by People Cert. Our role is to provide PRINCE2® training that prepares for certification and complies with the imposed content requirements.
The exam, which takes place in an online format, is administered by People Cert. Passing the Foundation level exam confirms knowledge of the entire methodology. Obtaining a Practitioner level certificate confirms the ability to apply it in practice in a given project environment based on a defined exam scenario.
PRINCE2® exam tips
We dedicate 3 days to learn the methodology and prepare for the first exam (PRINCE2® Foundation), while the repetition of the methodology and preparation for the second exam (PRINCE2® Practitioner) is completed in 2 days. You can take the online exam immediately after the training or later on a date of your own choosing from those provided by the Accreditor.
The exam voucher is valid for 12 months, but we encourage you to do it no later than two weeks after the training, while the knowledge has not yet “cooled down”. From the moment you decide to take the training and take the exam, you can quickly obtain an internationally recognized certificate of competence in project management.
This is especially important for those applying for a new job, or wishing to meet the formal requirements of, for example, projects co-financed by the European Union. However, PRINCE2® training is worth completing, not only because of the requirements imposed in advance. Any beginning project manager can benefit from learning about the structured approach to project management.
How PRINCE2® certification works?
The exam and training are currently closely connected. In accordance with People Cert rules, a person interested in learning about the PRINCE2® methodology and participating in the training is required to purchase it as a package with the exam at the selected level.
In addition, for the Foundation level, it is also mandatory to purchase access to the online manual provided by People Cert. This access is for 1 year, because after the training is completed, this is how much time we have to take the exam. The certificate obtained is valid for 3 years. It can be renewed by retaking the exam or by collecting points in People Cert's skills improvement system.
To take the PRINCE2® Practitioner certification, you must already be PRINCE2® Foundation certified. PRINCE2® Practitioner 7th certification can be taken by those with PRINCE2® Foundation 6th or 7th. Those with PMP certification can go directly to Practitioner level certification.

PRINCE2® Foundation exam
The PRINCE2® Foundation exam lasts 60 minutes and contains 60 single-choice questions. Passing requires at least 36 correct answers (60%). No supporting materials, including the official manual, may be used during the exam. The exam can be taken in Polish or in English.
PRINCE2® Practitioner exam
The PRINCE2® Practitioner exam lasts 150 minutes and consists of 70 single-choice test questions. Passing requires at least 42 correct answers (60%). The official PRINCE2® manual can be used during the exam. The exam is available in both Polish and English.
If, being a Polish-speaking person, you decide to take the exam in a foreign language, such as English you will get extra time on the exam.
Changes to PRINCE2® 7th edition also include technical aspects. Previously, the exam was made available on a special platform, but People Cert has resolved this issue and made technical matters easier for candidates. Currently, downloading the manual or logging in to the exam is done via a web browser.
Second approach to the exam - “Take2”
In the package with the training, exam and manual, you can also choose the Take2 option. It allows you to repeat the exam if you fail. Those who decide to buy the exam retake right away can repeat the approach within 6 months of the first exam.
This is a solution worth considering, since it is much more expensive to buy the exam retake separately. Unfortunately, the Take2 option can only be bought before taking the exam for the first time. There is no refund if you pass the test the first time.
Implementation of PRINCE2® in the practice
It is worth considering the purchase of a paper form of the manual or a digital version with no limit on the time of use. It is worth considering the purchase of a paper form of the manual or a digital version with no limit on the time of use. After all, while the principals and key elements of the methodology will probably be remembered permanently during training, some details, such as the design of PRINCE2® management products, are entitled to fade in our memory. The manual helps me a lot when working in any organization, providing a reference point.
The key to success is to tailor the methodology to the context of the project. This includes selecting and possibly combining management deliverables or simplifying or expanding processes. With the PRINCE2® manual, I have guidelines that help me consciously shape project management.
PRINCE2® vs other project management methodologies
However, it is important to note that despite the changes in PRINCE2® 7th edition and the significant enrichment of the human element, the methodology still does not represent the entirety of the competencies needed by a project manager. Many tools useful in project management are only briefly mentioned, and some are not included at all.
Therefore, I stand by my opinion that PRINCE2® contains a framework for project management, but filling it effectively with practice requires learning, practicing and consolidating additional tools and competencies. For this reason, I strongly encourage participants in PRINCE2® training to continue their development. There are many benefits to day-to-day work that will come from participation in the PMP® Academy, which emphasizes skill development and practice.
